Introduction to Candle Making
Candle making has existed for thousands of years, and over the centuries. The uses of candles has changed drastically, but their importance has always been prominent. Candles were once a necessity in every day life for Americans, as they were used as a primary source of light at night time before electricity was in existence Even after the invention of electricity, many of the poor citizens of the world, and even today used/use candles as their primary source of light at night.
In todays’ culture and technology, the uses of candles have changed, but the making of candles still continues to e a popular hobby for many different reasons. Many people enjoy making candles for their own personal use, or as a craft project to develop their skills, many people make candles to give to people as gifts. The sentimental value of being able to craft a gift for someone is far greater than any bought object. And last but not least, there are many people who actually make candles so that they can sell them as a business venture.
Making candles for either you personal use in the home, or to give away as a gift is a highly rewarding task, one that i highly recommend everyone to do on a regular bases, or at least once. Many local craft stores can supply you with all the required tools and materials that you need in order to make your own candles at home. Wax, molds, and wicks can all be purchased from nearly every craft store. Or if you’re unfortunate enough to live in a region were you can’t easily acquire the equipment that you need. Then you can always purchase what you need from the many stores on the Internet.
As the popularity of candle making as grown over the years, craft suppliers and manufacturers have widened the variety of ways that candles can be customized. Such as the, color, candle fragrances and decorations that can all be added to your own home made candle designs.
The first step to Candle Making is to start out by preparing the wax. This is done by melting the wax in a double boiler. Double Boilers are basically pots of water that are placed on a stove top and set to boil. Then a second smaller pot that contains the wax is sat insider the larger pot and left to melt. The reason for doing it this way is, if you were to just melt wax with say, a flame. Then the wax will also burn instead of melting.
The next stage is to take the melted candle wax and pour it into a mold. During this stage the wick is also held into place. Next allow the wax to cool, it is recommended to leave the candle for about four to six hours before removing it from the mold.
You now know the basic fundamentals of creating a candle, but it doesn’t stop at that. There is almost endless possible ways to customize and create different types of candles. Such as changing the fragrances, colors and even adding your own unique decorations. Some candle makers even take it one step further by creating their own molds out of latex, resulting in some amazing and extremely unique candles.
The only problem with making your own latex molds is that they are generally a lot less sturdy, and if not made correctly. They will not be able to hold the melted wax without losing their shape and form.
As mentioned earlier, they are many people who partake in Candle Making as more than just a hobby. Numerous entrepreneurs world wide have created business selling the candles that they make in the comfort of their own home. You can do this too by simply buying in bulk to get discounted rates on the candle supplies. Then selling your candles to anyone and everyone that wants to buy them. There is a whole market of hungry buyers out there looking for good quality and unique candles. Unique being the operative word, you really have to be creative and come up with some designs that amaze people to make the most profit.
