Their delicate flames are still utilized today for purposes of setting up an intimate mood as evidenced by restaurants which make use of candle-lit tables.. Some countries though are still using candles for its primary purpose: for lighting.

Whichever reason one might have for using candles, it is an advantage knowing how to make your own. With the skyrocketing prices of commodities nowadays, to be able to save on some things is already a big help. Since decorative candles are very pricey, why not make your own? Not only are these homemade candles cheaper, they are also personalized. You can design the candle the way you prefer it.

The basic component of candles is wax. Paraffin, or petroleum-based wax is the most commonly used today. However, there is something more natural than this. Beeswax, or the wax obtained from a beehive, is also a good material for candle-making. It is safer for use since it does not exude any toxic fumes. It is also cheaper especially if bought in a bee farm.

So, what are the steps on how to get started with beeswax candle making? You have three options to make the candles. If your beeswax is the one obtained directly from the honeycomb, you can start right away. The beeswax sheet is rolled with a wick in the middle. There is no need to put too much pressure when rolling. The portions of the wax will stick to each other.

Another option when beeswax candle making, is the use of molds. First, prepare the materials. There’s the beeswax, the wicks, steel pan, molds and scented oils. The beeswax is obtained in its solid state so it needs to be melted first. Use a double-boiler or a steel pan. Make sure that the temperature is adjustable. Wax cannot be subjected to direct and extremely hot temperature. After the wax is thoroughly melted, pour it into a mold. The mold must contain a wick in its middle and must be touching the bottom. Before it hardens, add just a drop of the scented oil.

Dipping is also another way on how to make candles with beeswax. After melting the wax, dip the wick in it. The wick will then be coated with wax. Before the wick hardens, dip it again in the melted wax for the second layering, and so on. The number of times the wick needs to be dipped depends on your preferred thickness of the candle. The fatter the candle you want, the more often you should dip the candle.

Beeswax candle making, and candle making in general, can also be a good bonding time among family or friends. It isn’t time-consuming, and can be enjoyed everyone. If your homemade candles are very good, who knows, you might even turn it into a business!
